Reading Plan What is Chronological Bible Reading, and what benefits may be found from following a chronological reading plan? The sixty-six books of the Bible are organized “canonically,” that is, by standards accepted by most Biblical scholars (for example, by purpose or human writer). This organization has well served to bring God’s Word to the world in an organized, orderly fashion, and still does today. However, this method of organization does not provide a sequential timeline view through the writings of approximately 40 different writers and 1,500 years of Bible history, and can result in confusion for Bible students as they seek to grasp the “story” of the Bible. Reading the Bible chronologically can help readers to understand Scripture in the context of historical events, to connect “the dots” as the relationships between the story lines and the Bible writers themselves is revealed. Additionally, many find the chronicled arrangement of reading helpful in understanding God’s plan for salvation, for fallen humanity to become reconciled with God, and in grasping answers to many questions about God… questions such as (to name a few):
